Local Birder, Pete Dellavalle Guides Small Group
On a recent cool, damp, grey morning, I met a small group of people who love the idea of having the Southeast Greenway become our newest city park, but we were there to see birds! And did we ever!
Our leader, Pete Dellavalle, with the assistance of his wife Tracy led us on a quiet walk to listen and look for resident and migrating species. With their practiced skills to guide us and tools such as the Merlin birding app to identify both song and image, we were able to spot and study a plethora of songbirds, many in breeding plumage. Pete was generous in sharing time to view the creatures on his scope while listening to their calls and songs. This allowed us to cement the image and sound of various common and some more rare examples of birdlife on the Greenway tract.
We viewed an uncommon Hooded Oriole – a gorgeous bird in his flaming orange and black Spring attire as well as multiple iridescent blue Western Bluebirds, Tree Swallows, House Finch and Yellow-Rumped Warblers. Pete identified a flock of Cedar Waxwings and many other residents for our enjoyment.
Want to have a fun and educational 2 hours to start your Saturday? You can’t beat this opportunity.
